1. night john is about a girl named sarny that lives on a plantation. one day the plantation owner brings a new slave in named john. he offers to teach people letters in the alphabet for tobacco. this is how sarny begins to read and write. the plantation owners dont allow the slaves to learn so they have to keep it a seceret. john also says that he had once escaped the plantation and had been a free man but he had to comeback to teach people how to read and write.
2. in 1937 malcolm moves in with the swerlins, a white foster family in lansing. he feels that they treat him like a pet and that he does not belong. he is first in his class at moson junior high. he is elected for class president. he wants to become a lawyer. his mother is in the mental hospital. he spends the summer of 1940 in boston with his sister ella. he moves to an upstairs room in his sisters house in roxbury.
3. there are many things in these stories that are similar. one of them is the setting, they all take place in the 1900's. they all have to do with how it was hard for african americans to fit in because of racism among white people. another thing similar is that in all three of these stories there is a hero figure. they also all have conflicts and resolutions to those conflicts.
